HEMET, CA — An armed suspect was arrested at the Hemet Department of Motor Vehicles this week, the California Highway Patrol San Gorgonio Pass Area reported.

The suspect, Kali Trammell —51, of Riverside— was taken into custody without incident and was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, among other charges, according to CHP officer Jason Montez.

On Monday, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Hemet police officers were dispatched to the DMV office after a DMV staff member called in a suspicious individual seen with a concealed weapon at that location.

"The suspect was sitting in the waiting room, waiting his turn while carrying the shotgun that he obscured with a curtain," Montez said.

Upon arrival, officers engaged Trammell—who was searched and found possessing a shotgun, according to Montez's report. Trammell was being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail, with a planned court appearance scheduled for Wednesday at 8 a.m.

No one was hurt during the incident, according to Montez.

"Due to the crime occurring on state property, the California Highway Patrol assumed custody and the criminal investigation from the Hemet Police Department," Montez said.

According to Montez, the investigation is ongoing, and charges will be forwarded to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

"The CHP would like to commend the DMV staff for their keen observations and quick action as well as the Hemet Police Department for their assistance and quick response, which significantly contributed to the prevention of what could have been a tragic incident," he said. "The California Highway Patrol reminds you that if you see something, say something."

Remember to report all safety concerns. You may save someone's life, he said.
