Aug 14, 2023US 27 Motor Tour rolls through central Michigan
Sitting in folding lawn chairs along Superior Street in Alma Thursday, Chuck Lozen looked on as people stopped to check out his 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT.
A member of the Michigan Fiero Club, Chuck; his son Stephen Lozen; and his brothers Jeff and Ken Lozen each joined the tour in DeWitt, traveling through Alma and St. Louis before heading with the tour to St. Louis and later to an overnight stop in Clare.
Chuck’s Fiero joined Stephen’s Dodge Charger, Ken’s Chevrolet Corvette and Jeff’s Pontiac Solstice.
Originally from Allen Park, the Lozen brothers take their cars to shows and tours during the summer, sharing their love of cars with like-minded people.
For seven years, the Lozens have driven their cars in the Michigan Old U.S. 27 Motor Tour, which starts in Coldwater to Cheboygan.
Stephen, a resident of Canton, said he doesn’t drive the Charger that often.
“It’s a fair weather car,” he said. “I try to drive it once a week in the summer if possible.”
Stephen enjoys the time spent with his father, uncles, cousin and the cars.
Chuck, who also lives in Canton, bought his Fiero 20 years ago because he liked the mid-engine design and because it’s a two-seater.
It recently won runner up in its class at the 40th anniversary Fiero celebration in Pontiac.
Ken, who lives in Algonac; and Jeff, a resident of Cincinnati, return to Michigan to join the tour and spend time with family.
Ken had a Chevrolet Nova in high school, and “jacked it up with air shocks and big tires,” and a 1973 Corvette before he purchased the 1995 model he brought on the tour.
Jeff’s 2008 Solstice is a GXP Turbo that goes from 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds, not that he ever tries.
After the tour stopped in Alma, it moved on to St. Louis, then to Clare, where the cars will be on display on McEwan Street before the tour moves north to Harrison with a police escort at 10:30 a.m. Friday before it heads to Grayling.
